tips for moving to Germany

Moving from Finland to Germany is a big change, so careful preparation will help you adapt to the new environment. There is no striking difference between German and Finnish culture and labour migration from Finland to Germany is common. To make your move to Germany easier, we have put together a list of the most important tips and pitfalls to prepare for.

  • Transport in Germany is efficient, fast and smooth. German traffic culture is respectful of other drivers and heavy vehicles. The left lane is only used for overtaking, after which drivers immediately move back into the right lane. Traffic control in speed-limit areas is also more effective than in Finland. In Germany, the use of studded tyres is largely prohibited.

  • There is a wide range of rental accommodation available in Germany. The majority of Germans live in rented accommodation themselves. German landlords are usually very particular about their tenants, so be prepared with the necessary documents. Documents can include passport/pay slip/credit history/guarantee details. The notice period in Germany varies, but the most common is 3 months. To find out about unfurnished rental properties, visit immobilienscout24.de (in German only).

  • You can live in Germany without a residence permit for up to three months. Please make sure you and your family have a European Health Insurance Card to get the necessary treatment. Germany has a two-tier health insurance system, consisting of compulsory statutory health insurance and voluntary private health insurance. Citizens covered by statutory health insurance can benefit from the "benefit-in-kind" principle, which means that they do not have to pay a healthcare provider (e.g. a doctor) in advance for the treatment they receive.

  • Cash is king in Germany. The default setting in a German shop or restaurant is that you cannot pay by card. So always bring the amount of cash you need. There are plenty of cash machines in larger shops or shopping centres, as well as on street corners. Prices are in the EU middle class, so shopping in a grocery or clothing store will generally be cheaper than in Finland.
