tips for moving to eastern europe

Moving from Finland to the beautiful Alpine region of Austria is an exciting new chapter in the life of many people. But it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the customs and protocols of the country beforehand.

  • Traffic in Austria is very similar to that in Finland or elsewhere in Europe. However, remember that there is a charge for using motorways in Austria. It is therefore worth sticking a windscreen sticker on your windscreen at the border if you arrive by car or buy one at a petrol station inside the country. In Austria, parking in "Blue-zone" areas is allowed for three hours with a parking disc.

  • Renting an apartment in Austria is considerably cheaper than in Europe and Finland. One reason for this is the number of state-subsidised rental apartments, up to 200 000 in Vienna. Depending on the salary level of the tenant, the rent for an 80m2 apartment can be less than €300. State rental housing is not subject to a maximum income limit and is therefore considered a viable option in Austria, regardless of living situation and income. In some cities, this has led to a lack of immediate availability of cheap rental housing and long waiting lists.

  • Residence in Austria requires registration at the local register office or municipal office if your stay exceeds 3 months (in the case of migrants, it often does). Also remember to make a declaration to the Finnish Population and Registration Office at the end of Finland about your move to Austria.

  • Health care in Austria is at a good level and has even been in the WHO top 10 in previous years. However, the cost of health care as a percentage of GDP has been measured at up to 11.2%. The majority of Austrians use and trust the country's public health care system. In case of need, you can access public health care with a European Health Insurance Card issued by Kela. If you live in the country for a longer period, it is worth looking into insurance, especially if you are self-employed.
