tips for moving to Sweden

Moving to Sweden, our beloved neighbour to the west, is a life-enriching and exciting experience. The countries are very similar through a long history of common history and cooperation, and Finns can often get by in Sweden with just English or Swedish and common sense. There are also differences and adapting to the country may require certain measures. See our handy tips and make sure that you get off to a good start in Sweden:

  • Traffic in Sweden has been right-hand traffic since 1963 and largely the same rules apply as in Finland. What many people don't know, however, is that there are tolls in Sweden, two of them. When crossing the Sundsvall or Motala bridges, you get a toll bill on your way home. The toll is charged every hour of the day and varies between SEK 5-20.

The free taxi market in Sweden has been around longer than in Finland. In the same way as in Finland, a price list and an example journey price must be found on the taxi window. Taxi Stockholm and Taxikurir are considered reliable in Sweden. As an example of pricing, Taxi Stockholm quotes a price of SEK 349-357 for a journey of 10 kilometres and 15 minutes, depending on the day and time of the week.

  • Renting an apartment , especially in Stockholm, can be challenging due to high prices and limited availability. Apartments that become available quickly may be re-let and the contract is signed with the tenant at the time. In many cases the monthly rent is more expensive than renting directly from the owner. According to a study by Blocket x qasa 2023, average rents in central Stockholm range from SEK 16 000 to 19 000 (€1,400 to €1,700).

  • You do not need a residence permit to move to Sweden. A Nordic citizen can stay in Sweden for a maximum of one year. If you plan to stay in Sweden for more than a year, you must register with the Swedish population register. Remember to register with the Swedish Tax Agency. It is a good idea to visit the Swedish Tax Agency's Skatteverket website beforehand.

  • In Sweden, health care is divided into private and public, as in Finland. The 1177.se website is a guide to Swedish health services. You can also talk to the health service in your area and get guidance on the right treatment.
