tips for moving to Spain
Moving abroad can feel like an exciting adventure, but there are still many variables to prepare for. In Spain, you can often get by with a good command of English and common sense. To help you move, we've listed the main tips and differences between Finland and Spain that you should prepare for beforehand.
Traffic in Spain is very different from that in Finland. Speed limits are virtually ignored and fast lane changes and speeding are commonplace. Even in Spain, it is still possible to get a speeding ticket and traffic speeds are monitored. In many cases, however, a 50% reduction is applied if the fine is paid within 20 days. It is advisable to pay attention, adapt to local customs and take traffic situations lightly.
It is advisable to study the housing market in Spain carefully and apply early, especially in the larger cities where demand is higher. Idealista, a favourite among Finns, is a good place to look for a home. Be careful, however, as the quality of landlords in Spain varies. It is a good idea to take your first apartment for a shorter period of time until you have got to know the area better and have seen the apartment live.
A NIE Number is an identity number issued to foreigners in Spain. The NIE number is needed for many official activities, such as opening a bank account, looking for a job, buying property and applying for a residence permit. Obtaining a residence permit in Spain can vary depending on the type of stay. Generally speaking, EU citizens do not need a separate residence permit to move to Spain, but they will need to register with the local residents' register (a NIE number is required), especially if they intend to stay for more than 183 days a year.
Spain has an excellent healthcare system, and EU citizens can join the public health system. Register at your local health centre and get a health card. If you are moving to Spain from Finland, you can also apply for an EU Health Insurance Card, which is valid temporarily and covers emergency treatment. You are still advised to take out your own health insurance, which covers a wider range of healthcare costs.
