tips for moving to Estonia
Moving from Finland to Estonia, our southern neighbour, is a life change that can feel exciting and the novelty of it all is high for many. Before you switch to Fazer's blue Kalevi marzipan, check out our round-up of tips for moving to Estonia:
Transport in Estonia differs from transport in Finland in a few ways. At traffic lights, you are not allowed to turn right when the main light is green, as you would in Finland. So be sure to wait for the additional right light to turn green before you start moving. The speed limit in Estonia is a respectable round 0, which is different from 0.5 in Finland. Basically, you'll do as well in Estonian traffic as you've done in Finland so far.
Renting an apartment in Estonia is somewhat cheaper than in Finland. You can get a studio in Tallinn for as little as €500. In smaller towns and cities, you can even get a month's rent for a studio apartment for closer to €200. For example, the City 24 website lists thousands of apartments in Estonia, so you can choose the one that suits you best. Pay attention to how electricity, water and maintenance costs are included in the rental contract or whether they are included in the rent. In addition to the rent deposit, the tenant usually has to pay the agent's commission. Finnish influencer Aaro Huttunen's Youtube channel has a lot more information on buying an apartment in Estonia.
You do not need a residence permit to move to Estonia and can stay for three months as an EU citizen without notifying the authorities. Remember to submit a notification of your move to Finland to the digital and population registers and register in the Estonian population register.
In Estonia, health care is run as a joint-stock company and a foundation. Joint and several health insurance is compulsory for everyone and entitles everyone to the same quality of service. As an employee, your employer pays your health insurance premium in Estonia, which is 13%. As a self-employed person, you have to pay the social tax yourself, at a rate of 33%. If you are used to paying YEL in Finland only according to the minimum annual income, you should take into account the compulsory social tax for entrepreneurs.
