Moving to Denmark to explore architecture and Scandinavian design is an exciting step for someone who has lived in Finland for a long time. Danish culture and ways of working are somewhat different from Finnish ones, but with a good command of English and an open attitude, Finns will blend in well. We put together a collection of Finnish and Danish differences and tips for those moving to Denmark:

  • Danish food culture is very homogeneous within the country. By far the most famous Danish food is quite simply a sandwich, the Smørrebrød. The sandwich contains a variety of ingredients, including canned fish, cold cuts, cheese and spread. As for meat, pork is very popular, while fish dishes such as Danish smoked herring are world-famous. Although Denmark is surrounded by the sea and famous for its fishing industry, the Danes themselves are not big consumers of fish food, especially in central Denmark.

  • Rental housing prices in Denmark, at least, are not cheaper than in Finland. In Copenhagen, the average price for 1-2 rooms and a kitchen is between 1000 and 1300 euros. Outside the city, it is easier to find accommodation and a yearly contract usually brings the price down compared to an open-ended contract.

  • Denmark has a good level of public health care and is in the top 10 in the world rankings. As an EU citizen, you are entitled to public health care by showing your European Health Insurance Card.
