  • Food culture Portuguese people are passionate about fish, and the country is renowned for its quality fish. Bacalhau, or dried cod, is a traditional dish and is prepared in many different ways. Sardines, octopus and shellfish are also popular. In Portugal, daily meals follow a traditional lunch-dinner rhythm. Lunch is often the largest meal of the day, with dinner later in the evening. Portugal is very well known for its quality wines. Port wine, from the Douro river valley, is a world-famous sweet wine. Vinho Verde is a fresh white wine from the north of Portugal.

Overall, Portugal offers good traffic conditions, and travellers can enjoy the scenery and variety of destinations in different parts of the country. However, it is advisable to be aware of local traffic rules and adapt to local conditions. Some motorways in Portugal are subject to tolls and are known as 'portagens'. The tolls can be paid either automatically, using a system based on number plate recognition, or at separate toll booths.
