Moving to Lithuania offers the chance to experience a unique culture and enjoy the country's beautiful scenery. Here are some tips and experiences that can help you prepare for your move and settling into your new country:

  • Lithuanian food culture favours hearty and meaty dishes. Traditionally, the protein source on the plate is pork and the carbohydrate is potatoes. However, Lithuanian food is no longer so black and white, and the restaurants' offerings also draw on more than just the country's Soviet history. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a mix of many cultures and up to 120 nationalities.

  • Living in Lithuania is considerably cheaper than in Finland. In the big cities, you can rent a studio apartment for as little as €200-300 per month. Keep in mind that in Lithuania you are often charged for housing costs (maintenance, heating) just like in Estonia. For example, heating and maintenance costs for an apartment can be in the tens or even hundreds of euros in winter.

  • As a rule, you need to register in Lithuania if you plan to stay for more than 3 months. This can be done by making an appointment at the local tax office. When registering, you will need to take documents with you, such as your identity card and proof of studies or employment.

    Taxation in Lithuania is nowadays also progressive, i.e. the tax rate is determined in stages, according to income thresholds. Previously, Lithuania had a flat tax rate of 15%, which was abolished in 2019.
