information for people moving to latvia
Moving to Latvia can really open up new opportunities and offer unforgettable experiences. Here are some tips and insights to help you prepare for this exciting adventure:
Latvian cuisine finds its influences and roots in Georgian, Azerbaijani and Uzbek cuisine. In the capital, of course, the cuisine is exactly the same as in other European countries and the choice is very wide. The traditional dishes are still worth exploring and, for those used to Finnish food, certainly an exciting experience. Traditional dishes include acidic (fermented) products such as dark bread and sauerkraut, as well as delicious Latvian braids, which can be both savoury and sweet. Riga's central market offers a wide range of delicacies and is the best place to discover the authentic local cuisine.
Living in Latvia is considerably cheaper than in Finland. In many cases, you can find apartments already furnished, if you value that. A fully furnished apartment +60 square metres can be found in Riga for as little as €800. We recommend that you check the condition of the property before renting and the cost of living in addition to the rent (heating, house maintenance, electricity).
Registration in Latvia is generally required if you plan to stay in the country for more than 3 months. This can be done by making an appointment at the local tax office. When registering, you will need to take documents with you, such as your identity card and proof of studies or employment.
Personal income tax in Latvia is based on income limits. People earning around €20 000 or less per year pay 20% tax, while those earning between €20 000 and €78 000 pay 23%.
